Volunteers - Join Special Olympics
The greatest satisfactions occur when you offer without expecting to receive back, when you see that your investment, either financial or in time or just a smile, it is a motif for joy and a step forward for others. For the Special Olympics athletes the attention of the people around them is very important. You being near them already transforms them into winners.
The Special Olympics Foundation can make you feel fulfilled for the support given to those who need you. The foundation exists only because of the volunteers that have been involved in the organization of our athletic competitions. Leading the athletes to a sports field, offering them a medal, helping set up a gymnasium can mean more that you think.
If you want to become a volunteer, the Special Olympics team and its athletes await you.
The role of volunteers in the Special Olympics activities
Volunteers are the spine of the Special Olympics NGO. There are now over 550 000 Special Olympics volunteers worldwide. And by volunteers we understand students from different universities, high school students, members of civic groups, amateur and professional athletes, sports officials and coaches, parents and relatives of the Special Olympics athletes, firemen, personnel from legal, military and medicine, teachers, retired people and business men.
In volunteering there a variety of roles that can be assumed: attendant to an event, active member of local programs or subprograms, national management team or member in the Board of Directors. The volunteers serve also as coaches, officials, program directors, local coordinators, sports management team, members in an athletic team and publicists, but also help in fundraising and solving administrative issues.
The local subprograms and the Special Olympics approved national programs are offering trainings to volunteers so that they can be prepared for their roles.
