YOUNG ATHLETES
This program started by the request of the parents and their intellectually disabled children at the age of eight and under, so that the children could participate in Special Olympics activities.
First, the program is aiming to help the intellectually disabled children to improve their physical, mental and social condition through specific activities. Secondly, by implementing Young Athletes, the parents are getting actively involved in their children’s physical training and they are being informed regarding the resources and support offered by Special Olympics. Thirdly, the program is aiming to inform and educate the public regarding the various disabilities of these children.
Romania was one of the 12 countries worldwide selected to implement this pilot program in 2005-2006 and was involved in the study coordinated by the Centre for Social Development and Education of the Massachusetts University (Boston, USA).
The program has the support of Mattel Children’s Foundation .
