Athlete Leadership Program
The Athlete Leadership Program is aiming to develop the communication abilities of the Special Olympics Athletes and to stimulate them into expressing their own ideas. Moreover, we want to implicate them in the decision-making and to establish a strategy for the implementation of different programs. Therefore, they can become members in the Board of Directors, coaches, volunteers, officials or even reporters.
The program is aiming to select those Special Olympics Athletes that enjoy speaking in public, that can easily express themselves and the ones that can become examples for other athletes due to their optimistic attitude. After being selected, they participate in seminars meant to help them discover new abilities and develop the existing ones.
Special Olympics Global Messengers – is a part of Athlete Leadership Program.
Once every two years, 12 athletes from all over the world are being selected for trainings in order to become Special Olympics representatives, by being visible for national and international media.
In September 2006, the athlete Ioana Ciobanu from Oradea Down Association was chosen, together with an athlete from Germany, to represent Europe/Eurasia in the new class of global messengers.
