Special Olympics Foundation has organized the National Athletics Games 2006 for people with intellectual disabilities in September 20- 22 in Alba Iulia. 300 athletes from all Romanian counties and Hungary gathered for this event to show they can overcome their own limitations. They have competed in marching, running, long jump and softball throw.
The competitions were preceded by the Torch Run of Special Olympics. Te opening ceremony, organized in the Cultural Center of the Syndicates, was presented by Larisa Claru. At the ceremony were present Mr. Rodger Garner, Director of USAID Romania, Dumitrel Ion, president of the County Council of Alba, Paul Voicu, vice mayor of Alba Iulia and other local officials. The defilation of the delegations was followed by a program honoring the athletes, organized by the County Council and the Mayoralty of Alba Iulia.
All actions planned for the National Games in Alba Iulia subscribe to the general vision of Special Olympics: "social inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities, encouraging communication through sports".
The National Athletics Games from Alba Iulia have been financed by USAID, traditional partner of Special Olympics Romania, along with the National Academy for Physical Education and Sports. Lasselsberger, Romtelecom, Nivea, Coca Cola, Carrefour, were the sponsors of this manifestation. The event was supported at local level by: the County Council of Alba- the General Direction for Social Assistance and Child Protection, the Mayoralty of Alba Iulia, the County Direction for Sports, the Cultural Center of the Syndicates, “Sprijiniti copiii” Association. Mix FM was the media partner of the event.
Special Olympics Romania (SOR) started its activity in 2003, as a part of the Special Olympics International Movement. At national level SOR organizes competitions for: basketball, football, athletics, bocce, alpine ski, table tennis and gymnastics, counts approximately 14 000 athletes and mobilizes over 500 volunteers.
