Adapted Physical Education

Adapted Physical Education is an international program that has the following objectives for 2006:

  • Introducing the Special Olympics programs in one hundred universities related to physical education, sports and physical therapy.
  • Developing the Special Olympics academic programme and resources
  • Training 5000 students through:
    1. - Special Olympics classes
      - Special Olympics workshops and seminars
      - The involvement of students into the practical experiences of Special Olympics
      - The involvement of students into organizing and coordinating more than 200 Special Olympics events, held in their campuses.

The first step in implementing this project was the APE seminar, held in Sarajevo during the first edition of the Special Olympics Friendship Games. At this moment, this program was necessary in Romania.

  • Discussing the special Olympics principles at the Physical Trainings and Competitions (Special Olympics official rules);
  • Involving students in volunteering experiences at Special Olympics;
  • Implementing and developing methodological and organizational structures in order to better prepare athletes with intellectual disabilities;
  • Training students into organizing and coordinating Special Olympics events;
  • Changing the students’ attitude toward people with intellectual disabilities through volunteering.
